A few weeks into life at Cambrian United, new signings Sophie McMullen and Ruby James are already making their presence felt, both on and off the pitch.

At just 18 years old, both players bring experience beyond their years. Joining the squad from Pontypridd United Women’s team, this move kicks off an exciting new direction.

The pair know what it’s like to be sidelined through injury, and what it takes to come back stronger. Now back in action, Ruby and Sophie are eager to make an impact, and are full of praise for the team’s welcoming atmosphere.

“It feels so nice to be back playing after being out injured for a while,” said Ruby James, who plays at centre-back. “I’m really enjoying the environment and the girls made me feel so welcome from the start. I’m looking forward to a new challenge and the season ahead.”

For Sophie McMullen, who leads the line as striker, joining Cambrian is about taking on a new challenge. “I’m excited to have joined Cambrian United – it’s the start of a new chapter for me after coming back from injury last season,” she said. “I heard the club needed a striker, and I enjoy a challenge.”

Both players already share strong links with Team Manager Claire O’Sullivan, having worked under her previously. “Claire was head coach at my last club, she’s amazing at what she does,” Sophie said. “I also know a few of the girls, which made the move easier.”

Ruby added, “I knew Claire and Shubham before Cambrian, as I played under them both last season and was also at Coleg y Cymoedd with Claire. I didn’t know any of the players before joining, but they made me feel like part of the team straight away, and I’m very grateful for that.”

Despite their youth, both bring strong footballing backgrounds. Sophie first played for Cambrian in the club’s Academy, representing them for two seasons while in Years 5 and 6 of primary school. Later playing for Llwydcoed Boys, and going on to represent teams including Rhondda Cynon Taff County, Performance Centre Wales, Barry Town United, and Pontypridd United. She’s also represented BGC Wales, travelling to Boston, Barcelona, and Scotland – even scoring against Scotland in both home and away fixtures.

Ruby’s journey began with Tredegar, Treowen Stars, and Abergavenny, before moving on to Pontypridd, where she was part of a promotion-winning side. She’s also represented Welsh Colleges and played for Coleg y Cymoedd over the past two years.

It hasn’t taken long for both players to make an impression. Ruby James has already been recognised for her solid defensive displays, earning Player of the Match for her performances early in the season.

Meanwhile, Sophie McMullen has received backing off the pitch through the support of Fare Landscaping and Groundwork, who have become her official sponsor for the season.

Ruby is currently seeking sponsorship opportunities to support her own development this season – a chance for local businesses or individuals to get involved and back a talented young player making a real impact at Cambrian United.

Cambrian United Women’s First Team Manager Claire O’Sullivan shared her thoughts on the impact both players have already made, since joining the squad:

“Sophie is a great finisher and a clever player, who makes intelligent runs. Her work rate and attitude to develop as a young player are fantastic, and I have no doubt she’ll blend seamlessly into the team’s identity with her attributes. I’m excited to see her become a key team player and hopefully score plenty of goals this season.

Ruby has already shown herself to be a solid defender with real presence. She reads the game well, brings composure to the back line, and has slotted into the squad with confidence. Both players bring real quality and character to the team, and I’m looking forward to seeing how they continue to grow throughout the season.”

As the season unfolds, both players are clear on what they hope to contribute.

“I look forward to working hard for the team and trying to score as many goals or assists as possible,” said Sophie.

Ruby echoed: “I want to do my best to contribute to the team by giving 100% every game and helping us keep clean sheets and limit goals conceded this season.”

Cambrian United Women’s Chairman, Luke Davies said:

“As Chairman of Cambrian United I am delighted to welcome both Ruby and Sophie, who join Cambrian United FC Women’s First Team from the Adran South title-winning Pontypridd United Women’s side.

Both players bring with them proven quality, experience, and a winning mentality that will undoubtedly strengthen our squad as we continue to build on the progress made in recent seasons.

These signings are a clear reflection of the growth, ambition, and direction of our women’s programme. At Cambrian United we are committed to developing a competitive, professional environment where talented players can thrive and help take the club to the next level.”
